Adjusting after a relocation takes time. Even if you are moving into the home of your dreams, there will still be things which you will find difficult to get used to at first. This is also the case after business relocations. A company may opt for the most top-rated office removals in London but this will not change the fact that its employees will need to adjust to a new commuting routine, a new workplace layout and so on and so forth. So, imagine how challenging such changes can be for children! As a parent, you need to help them settle in after your home move by:
- Making them feel involved and being open and honest with them
- Letting them have some control over the situation to make them feel secure
- Turn the day of the move into a smooth and hassle-free experience for them
- Encourage them to go back to their normal daily lives as soon as possible
- Surprising them with a nice treat every now and then
The most important thing which you need to remember is that in order for your kids’ to successfully and quickly adjust to the relocation, you need to start working on that not after you move but before that.
Before the move
Prior to your house relocation, you need to do two things – hire a seasoned man and van in Wallington SM6 and to slowly start introducing your children to the idea of moving home. Sit down and talk through the upcoming transition at length. Speak with your children like you would speak to an adult. If their reaction to the news is not a positive one, hear them out and see what it is exactly that they find frustrating or unsettling about the whole situation. Sometimes, the only thing kids really need is to be assured that everything will be ok. Keeping your children in the loop and discussing the relocation’s details with them will make them feel included in that important process. But you also need to give them some control because they may feel disappointed about such a big decision which was not made by them. Let them pick the colours for their new room or take them with you when you go home hunting.
During the move
The moving day can be incredibly stressful for young children. If you can, leave them at the house of a relative or a friend so that they will not have to go through it. That will also make your job a little easier as you will not need to constantly look after them. If you are about to make a long-distance move, bring plenty of snacks and water for the road to make their journey more comfortable.
Start by going on an exploration trip around your new neighbourhood. Visit local restaurants, museums, tourist attractions and show your children all the exciting things about the new area. Make sure you also spend more time together doing things your kids love – going out to the park, playing various games, cooking their favourite meal… But do not spoil them rotten. Help them be focused, organised and engaged by making a list of chores for them. That will enable them to swiftly get back to their daily routine.
