As you may already know, the area of Greater London is divided into 33 big districts that are called boroughs. Enfield is one of them. It is located to the north of Central London and includes the northernmost tip of the London metropolitan area.
The beginnings
It all started from the eponymous market town that now forms the heart of the borough. It used to be a day’s walk from London on the edge of Epping Forest. Things changed for what was to become the London Borough of Enfield with the arrival of the railway in the middle of the 19th century. Travelling to and from London was possible in a matter of an hour, instead of a whole day and more and more people began living in town. New suburbs were developed and Enfield became a popular destination for people who were looking to escape the hassle and stress of the big city.
Enfield has a solid place on the map
By the end of the 19th and throughout the 20th centuries Enfield became a prominent industrial centre in the vicinity of the capital. The Royal Small Arms Factory played an important role, but what is more curious to the modern person is the fact that a number of technological advances were made namely here:
- The first ATM machine began operating here in June 1967 in the Barclays Bank branch in Enfield
- The world’s first mass-produced dish-washer was manufactured in the contemporary Hotpoint’s plant in Enfield
- Ferguson began manufacturing the world first solid-state circuitry colour televisions at their now-closed plant in Enfield
When you come to think of it, the area has given so much to society in terms of things that we now consider to be more or less a staple of everyday life.
Present day Enfield – the best districts to live in
Today the borough is much more than eponymous town and its immediate surroundings. It covers a territory of 82.2 square kilometres which makes it one of the biggest London boroughs. 332,700 people live in the various neighbourhoods around here and their numbers are rising steadily. If you are wondering which the best place to live in Enfield is, there can be several answers to that question.

The rising demand for quality moving services in Palmers Green N13 hints at the qualities of this particular district. Home to the Palmers Green Shopping Centre and Green Lanes, with many fine restaurants, shops, and other amenities, it is a thriving and rather vibrant community you will be glad to be a part of. Few people know that for years Palmers Green has also been where the biggest Green Cypriot community in London is based, which is why the area is still often referred to as Little Cyprus or Palmers Greek.
Ponders End is another place that we would recommend that you check out. The River Lee Navigation and the Overflow Channel run through it and are responsible for the unique character and atmosphere in the district. Overall, Ponders End is a quiet and quite a peaceful community that is well connected to both more vibrant parts of the borough and Central London via railway, with Ponders End railway station being the main transport hub here. Access to trusted removal services in Ponders End EN1, EN3 is always easy.
